The Selcouth Star
I am a mother of three sons, the first of whom died on January 3, 2023. He was a star to me, to everyone who took the time to know him. I started painting with him in 2017, as a way to connect more with him, as he was non-verbal and quite a beautiful mystery his whole life. His health had changed dramatically in 2019, and as we moved to Spain in 2022, it soon became clear that he wouldn't be staying long. I like to say that he, in fact, brought us all to Spain, as though it must have been one of his missions. As a way to cope through a very heavy and sometimes overwhelming transition to live in a foreign country with everything new, from the language to finding doctors to manage Jonas’ complex medical needs, I started writing.
Love, Grief, and The Selcouth Star
My coping journals slowly over time turned into a book. This is the birth of The Selcouth Star, a story about the life and death of Jonas, who changed not only our lives, but who I am as a human forever. It is a real life tale of gut wrenching loss and despair balanced by an enormous amount of love and hope that the wisest young boy named Jonas brought to life for so many.

*Selcouth

is a rare adjective that means unfamiliar, strange, or uncommon, yet often possessing a marvelous or wondrous quality. It describes something so unusual and extraordinary that it feels both mysterious and awe-inspiring.
